Classes

Quality Educators
SOSD offers fun, friendly classes to encourage growth, discipline, and exploration. Students are taught by a staff that includes professional dancers and teachers from college dance programs. The teaching staff continuously pursues education excellence by participating in continuing education. The staff learns new techniques, dance steps, and teaching approaches from the world’s foremost dancing professionals.

Class Placement   Students are carefully evaluated by our staff on an ongoing basis.  Dancers are placed in classes according to age, experience, and ability.

Missed classes may be made up in another class of similar age and level. Classes may only be made up during the month of which they are missed. Makeup classes may not be available during certain months due to preparations for our Annual Dance Extravaganza.

Attendance  Training is progressive.  Dancers cannot reach their full potential with excessive absences.  Good attendance is especially important while we are teaching choreography (May & June) and again as we prepare for our recital (Sept & Oct).  Please give the studio a quick call if your child is going to miss a class.

Preschool Program (Ages 3 & 4)

Two types of classes are offered for our youngest dancers.
A Tap/Ballet combo class serves as an introduction to the world of dance through a ½ hour of pre-tap and a ½ hour of pre-ballet.  This class also includes singing and counting to music.

Our Acrobatic/Dance class is a one hour class designed for the 3 to 4 year old and is popular with both boys and girls.  This class introduces the dancers to basic coordination and locomotive skills mixed with simple dance moves as well as teamwork and beginner tumbling progressions.

Our experienced, professional staff is trained in early childhood to ensure that your little one has a positive experience.
Preschool dancers perform on stage with the aid of an assistant.  One hour of class per week equals one routine in the show.  Preschool Dancers perform in our matinee show.  All dancers are included in our signature Finale!
Preschool classes are held on Wednesday and Saturday mornings.

Kinderdance Program (Ages 5 & 6)
This program serves as a transition from preschool to our recreational program.  Kinderdance is the perfect next step for preschool students as well as a wonderful introduction to dance for beginner 5 and 6 year olds.  Kinderdance classes are structured more toward steps and skills while keeping the classroom upbeat and fun.  Kinderdance routines include more challenging but appropriate choreography, with more formation changes.
Kinderdance Classes Offered:
Kinderdance Tap/Ballet Combo.  This class meets one hour per week with a half hour of tap and a half hour of ballet.  Students are taught basic beginner skills, steps, positions, and vocabulary.
Acrobatic/Dance class one hour per week.  Class begins with a lively warm-up and proceeds to include tumbling skills such as forward and backward rolls, backbends, cartwheels and other tumbling progressions.  Simple dance moves are also included in this class.

All Classes are designed for the 5 and 6 year old and kept fun and upbeat to hold their attention.
These classes are held on Tuesday afternoons and Saturday mornings. Our experienced, professional staff is trained in early childhood to ensure that your little one has a positive experience.
Kinderdance students perform on stage without the aid of their teachers.  One hour of class per week equals one routine in the show.  Kinderdance students perform in our evening show.  All dancers are included in our signature Finale!

Recreational Program (Ages 7 & up)

We proudly graduate dancers from our recreational program who are beautiful and proficient in the art of dance!  This program is offered to all students ages 7 and up.  Recreational students are divided into classes based on age and level.  Dancers in the Recreational Program are not obligated to take any specific number of classes.  Students that enjoy a variety of extracurricular activities find that the SOSD Recreational Program is a perfect fit.  Our outstanding recreational program makes up approximately 75% of our school.  Most dancers ages 7 and older will have the opportunity to perform in both our matinee and evening performance.  All of their hard work is able to be appreciated in two performances.  Every dancer is also included in our SOSD Signature Finale.  One hour of dance per week equals one routine in each show.
Whether your child is enrolled for one or ten hours per week our promise is to give all SOSD dancers the highest level of instruction.  Dancers are treated as individuals and encouraged to work to their fullest potential.  Students thrive in our recreational program to become accomplished in the dance disciplines they study. Classes offered to our Recreational Students include:  Acrobatics, Ballet, Hip Hop, Jazz, Lyrical, and Tap

Class Observation
Parents are invited to observe class during our “Peek Week” in early Spring. Look for exact dates for “Peek Week”. Periodically we open the door to share our progress with our families. We all enjoy showing our loved ones how hard we work and how much fun we are having!

Fall Performance!SOSD offers many performance opportunities. Both the SOSD Company and the Recreational program participate in our FALL Recital. After years of listening to parents and participating in Spring Recitals, Shannon O’Brien School of Dance discovered that a Recital Performance runs smoother when it is not competing with the end of the school year, the finish of sports and academics, and preparations for summer. See why our families Love a FALL Performance!

SOSD
Families Love Our Season!

Here Is Why...
SOSD has a fall recital. Our families love that the timing of our annual recital does not conflict with the weddings, communions, proms, graduations, concerts, school functions and other busy May and June events.

How It Works…
Season Opens the last week of October/first week of November.

Classes Run through June.

Dancers start to learn choreography for the recital in the Spring.

Studio closes for the first few weeks of July.

Optional 4 Week Summer Dance Program

Two Mandatory Weeks..1 week in July and 1 week in August we ask that all dancers come back to their classes (if they are not on vacation) to rehearse and review our material for the recital.

September-Classes resume after Labor Day and conclude with our Fabulous Recital in mid October.

Families of dancers love to come to a fall show, when they are not so busy with all of the other happenings of Spring and Summer!!

It Works!!
